Phone scammers

There has been a huge increase in the number of people who are getting called by scammers pretending to be from Telstra and Microsoft etc. Another trick is to claim they are a company that overcharged you and want to pay you back.

Remember:
1. Be suspicious of someone contacting you out of the blue
2. Don't provide personal or banking information to someone you don't know
3. Don't send any money to someone you don't know
4. DO NOT WIRE TRANSFER
5. Verify the identity of the person who calls, and do not be afraid to ask questions.

If you have provided financial information, immediately contact your bank.

For some reason, they may also offer to transfer money to you, and have you transfer some smaller amount back to them. DO NOT DO THIS. Sometime later that transfer will be found fradulent, and the money taken from your account. Leaving you out of pocket for whatever you transferred back.

I will fix your computer fast! Most of the time, customers get their computer back the next day. Problems vary, but the cost tends to fall between $75 and $175. There are exceptions, if there is going to be a delay I will contact you to let you know. I am good at quoting, and 99% of the time the job costs what I said it would. If for some reason it is going to be more, I always contact you first and discuss your options. So no nasty surprises. Open Monday to Friday 8:30am to 6:00pm. No cash? No worries, I take cards too.

There is a ransomware attack that is ripping through the UK and Europe and is expect to continue spreading. This virus will encrypt all your files and demand money before allowing you to access them again. It primarily targets business, but will happily infect you too if it gets a chance.

The ransomware is leveraging a flaw in Microsoft Windows that was fixed in March this year. If your system and antivirus are up to date you should be safe, If you have not applied Windows updates for a while you must do that now.

The fix was issued for Microsoft Windows 7, Windows 8 and Windows 10. It also fixed Windows server 2008 and 2012.

The Microsoft Security Response Team have taken the extraordinary step of also releasing a patch for unsupported Windows XP, Windows 8 and Windows Server 2003.
